The Psalm Project #40

Bible Open to Psalms

How can I repay the Lord
for all his goodness to me?
I will lift up the cup of salvation
and call upon the name of the Lord.
I will fulfill my vows to the Lord
in the presence of all his people (Psalm 116:12-14).

Dear God,
the Old Testament saints had no idea
how You would save us,
but here is mention of “the cup of salvation,”
which brings to my mind the Lord’s Supper.
Here, in the midst of man’s praise to You,
You have given them a glimpse of the Savior.

Lord, I thank You for the cup of salvation,
the blood of Your Son,
who makes me free to be Your child.
Thank You for Your brilliant Plan to save Your people. Amen.

The Psalm Project #39

Bible Open to Psalms

Even in darkness light dawns for the upright,
for the gracious and compassionate and righteous man.
Good will come to him who is generous and lends freely,
who conducts his affairs with justice (Psalm 112:4-5).

Dear God,
Paul said to thank You in all circumstances.
What wise counsel that is!
The first time I thanked You when I was in trouble,
You brought to my mind the truth—
how You have blessed me in hundreds of ways;
how You have brought beauty from what looked like ashes and ruin.
The truth is, when I walk with You,
I have access to heaven and protection from evil.
Even when times are difficult,
I come through the other side when I am with You.
Even when I am in darkness,
light dawns when I reach for You.
Thank You for Your unfailing love. Amen.

Bible Open to Psalms

May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord; may the sins of his mother never be blotted out. May their sins always remain before the Lord, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth (Psalm 109:14-15).

Lord, You promised that if we repent and turn away from our wickedness,
You will remember our sins no more.
I thank You for forgiving my sins.
I can’t leave them behind without Your help.
Change my heart so that I want only what You want.
Help me to thirst for the righteousness only You can give. Amen.

Bible Open to Psalms

They exchanged their Glory for an image of a bull, which eats grass (Psalm 106:20 NIV).

Lord, I want to scoff at the Israelites
who worshipped the golden calf.
They had experienced Your powerful presence
in the pillars of cloud and fire.
They had been delivered from oppression
by Your strong hand.

But God, what idols have I worshipped instead of You?
Have I dreamt of wealth and fame and comfort?
Have I desired extravagant gifts and an opulent lifestyle?

Lord, I recognize that I am Your beloved
and You have generously blessed me.
I have everything I need or desire.
Make me content and generous with what I have.
Let me desire nothing but you.
If I strive to acquire more,
let it be more love and intimacy with You,
and more righteousness that comes only from Jesus. Amen.

The Psalm Project #36

Bible Open to Psalms

He wraps himself in light as with a garment;
he stretches out the heavens like a tent
and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters.
He makes the clouds his chariot
and rides on the wings of the wind.
He makes winds his messengers,
flames of fire his servants (Psalm 104:2-4 NIV).

Dear God, You made everything there is.
All the resources of heaven are Yours
to use as You see fit.
What did You do before You created the world?
Did You just enjoy the companionship of the Godhead
until You chose to make the angels?
Why did You make such fickle, selfish creatures as human beings?
Did You conceive them as something that would glorify You?

Lord, take me, one of Your most humble works,
and craft me into the woman You had in mind when You designed me.
Draw me close to You
and help me reflect You. Amen.

The Psalm Project #35

Bible Open to Psalms

I will set before my eyes
no vile thing.
The deeds of faithless men I hate;
they will not cling to me.
Men of perverse heart shall be far from me;
I will have nothing to do with evil.
Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,
him will I put to silence;
whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart,
him I will not endure (Psalm 101:3-5 NIV).

Lord, thank you for surrounding me with godly friends.
I confess that I love them and am most comfortable around them.
When I am among others who hate You,
I put down my head and retreat.
Lord, change me.
Make me bold when I see and hear evil.
Make me speak out against sin when I see it.
Make me confront the liar and the gossip.
Help me condemn the oppressor.
Make me vocally one of Yours.
May people see that I am different.
May people want the relationship I have with You.
May I influence people for You. Amen.

Let the rivers clap their hands,
let the mountains sing together for joy;
let them sing before the Lord,
for he comes to judge the earth (Psalm 98:8-9 NIV).

Lord, Your people look forward to Your coming.
Judge the world and abolish evil forever.
Remake the earth according to Your design;
make it holy again, as You are holy.
The rivers and mountains rejoice;
the trees clap their hands, for You are the Holy One.
You will raise the dead and divide them.
Thank You for paying my ransom,
So that I can dwell with You for eternity. Amen.

Bible Open to Psalms
Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker;
for he is our God,
and we are the people of his pasture,
the flock under his care (Psalm 95:6-7 NIV).

Dear God,
I am nothing but a sheep in need of a shepherd.
I need your guidance and protection.
How often have You saved me when I’ve wandered off on my own.
You are faithful to find me and carry me back to the fold.
When I follow You, Lord, I know joy.
As I obey You, I grow stronger.
Help me to hear Your voice and stay close to You.
In Your presence I am safe. Amen.
